To Selena, with love

Yesterday on Facebook I saw a post from my cousin Debbie. She said she had just ordered the new book from Chris Perez- To Selena, with Love. I had no idea Chris wrote a book! Of course I had to get it ASAP! I bought the kindle version and started reading it right away! When Selena died I was obsessed with the whole story. I mean, it wasn’t like I became a fan AFTER her death. No, not at all. Selena is the reason why I started listening to Tejano music. I’ll never forget hearing Enamorada de ti for the first time and immediately falling in love with her and the music. It was so different, it sounded like the music I listened to, like it was a pop song, but in spanish! Tejano music was something my parents listened to, it wasn’t something a 17 year old like me would listen to! lol That was my parents music! UGH! I don’t even speak spanish, why I would I listen to that stuff? Selena changed that real fast. I went out and bought the cassette and wore that thing out. And every chance we got to go see her, me and my cousins would go. And we would be in AWE of her, she was just like us. A young mexican-american girl who didn’t speak spanish! haha! I loved her and her music. When she died it was like losing a friend. It was so sad. I’ll never forget that day and how my husband (then boyfriend) called to tell me and I thought he said VELINA (i have an aunt named velina!) got shot and I was like “WHAT??? VELINA GOT SHOT???” and he said, “NO! SELENA! Turn on Tejano 107, that’s all they’re talking about!” And so I did and I was glued to that radio for the rest of the day. I remember watching the Yolanda Saldivar standoff on the news and how I couldn’t believe that woman shot my idol. So heart breaking. I’ve always had so many questions about Selena and Chris and Chris did a great job answering them in the book. I won’t spoil it for you, but if you’re a Selena fan, you definitely need to read the book. I’d love for the rest of her family to write a book. I’d love to hear their side of the story and how they found out and dealt with the tragic loss. Especially A.B. (Selena’s brother). I’m so glad Chris wrote the book and gave us the opportunity to hear his side of the story and to share with us the real Selena. The Selena he fell in love with. I still cry when I see the Selena movie. I cry from start to finish, so sad. About a year after Selena died, my husband took me to Corpus to visit the grave and the boutique. I actually got to meet Suzette (Selena’s sister) and buy some stuff from the boutique. That’s something I’ll never forget either and so thankful that my husband didn’t complain about having to take me! lol
